engraving

is a collective term for several printing techniques. In all of these techniques, the image is applied in the printing form. Oil-based ink is rubbed into the deeper parts (the grooves). Then, the surface is cleaned carefully so that only the ink remains in the engraved design. Examples of engraving techniques are etching, dry needle etching, aquatint, mezzotint and collagraph. When engraving techniques are used, the number of prints is usually small (copperplate approx. 50 good and approx. 200 reasonably good prints; zinc plate approx. 30 good and approx. 120 reasonably good prints.
