Aquatint is an etching process which aims to imitate washed drawings - so tones and tints. Graduations of tone are achieved by applying texture to the plate, for which various methods are use. The area to be etched is dusted with a powder-like resin and then heated, resulting in the resin granules adhering to the surface. The plate is then submerged in an acid bath, whereby the openings between the resin granules are corroded away.
