abstract expressionism

Abstract expressionism is characterised by an unpredictable, capricious form of art. She is unbound in her use of colour and is spontaneous, impulsive, able to improvise, emotional and highly expressive. The way in which the painting is dealt with and the dynamics of painting, without a predetermined plan, play an important role. The artist "switches off" his resistance and allows himself to be led by spontaneous ideas and free associations. The expressive element can result from the way in which the paint is applied to the canvas (action painting) or by the use of all sorts of materials mixed with paint, such as sand, sawdust, fabric (material painting). The American painters Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and the Frenchman Jean Dubuffet are well-known representatives of abstract expressionism.
